2D MT numerical simulation using FEM based on bi-tree grid

Abstract:The computation efficiency of numericalsimulation depends directly on the number of nodes cre-ated by the discrete model.Usually the magneto-telluric forward modeling increases the verticalsteps and reduces the vertical discrete nodes.But itis difficult to increase the horizontal steps with thedepth by the regular discrete method.In view ofthis situation, we propose a model discrete algo-rithm based on the binary tree structure.Using bi-tree,the algorithm calculates quadrilaterals,andthen performs triangulation on the quadrilaterals.It is easy to achieve double quadratic interpolationby inserting the middle point at side of triangle.The triangle with middle points can be triangulatedinto four sub-triangles. The numerical simulationsdemonstrate that this method greatly improvescomputation efficiency with fewer nodes while theforward modeling accuracy matches with that ofthe regular discrete method.
