Abstract:The analysis of seismic data comes to the conclusion that the shortening of formations in a compressional basin mainly results from faulting and folding. The shortened part due to faulting is equal to horizontal fault throw, and the shortened part due to folding is the difference between a curved formation length and its corresponding"span". The shortened parts of formations can be used to construct the balanced palaeogeological cross sections and geological horizon maps in a compressional basin and to analyse the tectonic movement strength in different geological ages and different parts of the compressional basin.
