Abstract:Quality factor Q is an important parameter of hydrocarbon detection and reservoir characterization, which reflects the subsurface seismic wave attenuation. Q estimates are of great significance. Most methods of Q estimation need a certain window to obtain spectrum of seismic wavelets. Windows with different shapes or lengths destroy more or less attenuation. Q estimation errors are analyzed with different source wavelets and different windows through model tests. These tests show that spectral ratio is susceptible to windows shape and lengths, and then destroy the true attenuation relationship, on which unauthentic Q information is estimated. Another test gives an interesting conclusion that spectral ratio curve satisfy the accurate attenuation at high frequency when using attenuation windows. This property is almost valid for arbitrary shape and width of window.
