Abstract:Recent drilling in the mid-deep overpressure zone in Yinggehai Basin faces a new challenge of low velocity mudstone trap. Seismic reflection features of low velocity mudstone and gas-bearing sandstone reservoirs are similar and characterized by low frequency and strong amplitude on seismic facies. Based on rock physics analysis, velocity of this kind of mudstone is lower than that of gas-bearing sandstone reservoir; its impedance value is equal to or even lower than that of gas-bearing sandstone. So conventional geophysical approaches such as seismic facies and post-stack wave impedance inversion, cannot identify low velocity mudstone and reservoirs. The trap of low velocity mudstone has become an obstacle to next exploration in Yinggehai Basin. To deal with these problems, we analyze systematically rock physics and AVO forward modeling of drilled wells in Yinggehai Basin and find out some characteristics of rock physics and AVO. On this basis, we use AVO and prestack inversion to distinguish low velocity mudstone from sandstone reservoir and achieve some satisfied results, which will be helpful to the future exploration in the area.
