Analysis of applicability of AVO technique in prediction of coal-measure tight gas in eastern margin of Erdos Basin

Abstract:The amplitude variation with offset (AVO) technique is mature and efficient in predicting conventional gas-bearing reservoirs. However, it demonstrates unstable performance in the prediction of tight gas reservoirs above and below the source rock in coal seams in the eastern margin of the Erdos Basin, and the influencing factors are unknown. Hence, seven lithological combination models falling within four categories are constructed for AVO forward modeling considering the vertical lithological combinations of the coal-measure tight sandstone gas reservoirs in the study area. The AVO response with the variation of different parameters in all geological models is analyzed, and the variation laws of AVO response are intuitively displayed through template charts of AVO to further deduce the application scope of AVO. The research can provide a reference for the prediction of gas-bearing formations by AVO in other areas with similar geological conditions.
