Abstract:The Tarim basin has special geological and seismic characteristics. Determining an accurate velocity field in the basin is a very huge project. The paper describes the procedures of both velocity field determination and software implementation. Based upon ascertaining some favourable structural traps at 5 000 m deep whose closures are 20~30m,we researched into both the method to determine velocity field and the measures to improve the application effect in detailed interpretation of structural traps. The velocity field plays an important role in wide velocity analysis ,structure mapping,geologic and geophysical researches in the basin.
