Abstract:The technique of vertical seismic profiling has been most commonly used for the precise identification of primary and multiple reflections, dip calculations near the borehole, the derivation of seismic deconvolution operators, and the depth prediction of acoustic impedance changes ahead of drilling. New processing routines now permit a higher degree of vertical and lateral resolution of the VSP data which reveal structural and stratigraphic features not hitherto apparent in surface seismic profiles. In the field delineation and development stages of marine exploration, where a combination of vertical and deviated wells are normally available, VSP data provides a high resolution seismic response of the major zones of interest, ryent discontinuities and diffraction patterns indicate the presence of fault and scarp features; the truncation of bedding against unconformities and other small scale features can be clearly seen, VSP data provides the unifying link between the surface and borehole observations of structural and stratigraphic features, and for complete understanding requires the integration of the interpretations of the geophysicist, petroleum geologist and petroleum engineer.
