Geophysical technology major achievements at CNPC during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan and lookout for the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan

Abstract:National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC) has been committed to geophysical technology research and development, key equipment and software development, and supporting technology development. Major achievements made by these measures are listed in the Top 10 technology developments at CNPC, and has made CNPC get into the international advanced level. The newly developed geophysical technology has been successfully applied in the exploration of complex subsurface, such as foreland tectonic, heterogeneous carbonate, complicated stratigraphy, and volcanics. The full range of advanced geophysical technology at CNPC for R & D, and application is formed, and has made great contributions in the most important discoveries of hydrocarbon reservoirs in Yingxiongling of West Qatam, Longwangmiao of Central Sichuan, Lake Huanma of Xinjiang, and North Tarim during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan. This new geophysical technology has also greatly accelerated CNPC international activities. When the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan comes, the international petroleum industry now is facing a big challenge, i.e. very low oil price. And the exploration is getting in a transitional period. Geophysical business is getting in an extremely difficult time. To support the development of CNPC during the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan, the geophysical technology at CNPC will be accelerated by both innovation driven and value driven. We are going to make greater efforts for new geophysical technology, new equipment, new software and other cost-efficient approach development to support effective exploration and find profitable reserves. This paper presents the major geophysical technology progress during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, and discusses challenges and geophysical technology development direction for the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan.
